This shake is one of my favorites because it is easy, very filling and very healthy. On days when I’m feeling low in energy and want a drink that’s a little different to water, juice or tea, I pull out my blender.
How to make the Almond Date Shake:
1. In the blender, add 1-2 handfuls of fresh Medjool dates (first removing the seeds)
2. Add 1 handful of almonds
3. Fill the blender to its maximum level with water
4. Blend for 30-60 seconds to break the almonds fine enough for drinking.
This shake is silky to drink, frothy on top, and the last mouthful is full of almond crumbles to chew. I just love it.
A handful of almonds provides most of our RDI for minerals, vitamins and protein. They are packed with dietary fibre too. Almonds are perfect for improving and maintaining healthy skin, bones and immune system. You can read more about almonds here.
Medjool dates are perfect for sweetening a recipe with natural sugars. (Dates are virtually fat-free with less than 0.04g of fat per date, however they contain 60% more calories than bananas or oranges.) Dates may help busy mums in meeting energy needs whilst assisting the nervous system and muscle function, and pregnant women as they can help soften stools. They also contain many beneficial nutrients and vitamins and can help regulate the body’s blood sugar levels and decrease the absorption of cholesterol. More info on Dates here.
Note: this recipe may not be suitable for people with nut allergy disorder, please take care when feeding children nuts and almonds. If you or your child has any of these symptoms after eating, drinking or preparing food with almonds, see your doctor: vomiting, abdomen pain, diarrhea, swelling of lips and throat leading to difficulty breathing, chest congestion.
